Difference Between Determinate and Indeterminate Growth in Biology

Difference Between Determinate and Indeterminate Growth in Biology - Most plants continue to grow for years. However, some other plants stop growing within one or two years. In general, plant growth can be divided into two types, namely determinate growth (limited growth) and indeterminate growth (unlimited growth). Are you curious about these two types? In determinate or limited growth, plants will complete their life cycle. Starting from germination, flowering, producing seeds and die within one or two years of the season. Plants that complete their life cycle in one year or less are called annual plants. Examples of this annual plants are rice, corn, beans and sunflowers. Whereas plants that complete their life cycle within two years are called biennial plants. Examples of this biennial plants are carrots and beets.

In indeterminate growth, plants continue to grow as long as they are still alive. Such plants complete their life cycles in years called perennial plants. Examples of this perennial plants are woody plants (like mango trees), shrubs (like roses), and some grasses (like bamboo). Plants with unlimited growth (indeterminate growth) do not mean they will live forever or will not die. However, these plants are able to experience continuous growth as long as environmental conditions support. 

In that such conditions, plants with unlimited growth can live for years. Why can it happen like that?. One of the other reason is because these plants have embryonic tissue that called meristem. As long as these plants can still survive, plants can grow unlimited because there is activity of meristem cells. The activity of meristem cells also causes primary growth and secondary growth in plants.
